My favorite was watching my manager explain to a customer who wanted to buy one of these (last year's model on closeout) the he couldn't change out the bars to his fit numbers for less than $800. Seriously, as a shop how do you tell someone, "yeah, it's going to cost $150 to change that cable because we're shelving other projects all afternoon to deal with this." Literally a 5 minute job on my roadie and my breaking performance is far superior to those janky centerpulls. Took 3 hours to change a fucking brake cable and reassemble the cockpit. ![]() When we transferred one in, the other shop had cut the rear brake housing 3cm too short (you have to allow enough that it kinks side to side in the top tube) and as a result the rear brake would engage when you turned the bars. Probably more including all the Trek videos I had to watch. The first one of these I put together literally took the entire day to assemble. Don't let fancy bells and whistles keep you from buying an actual, functional machine. Trek makes clamps for oddly shaped posts, but they don't make a clamp for this one (or if they do, we never got one). Not only that, they are a real bastard to clamp in a stand. Trek went through a phase with teardrop shaped posts, and it was very common for them to crack. Thanks, Trek.Īero seatposts are uncommon for a reason. This is never, I repeat - NEVER - an issue on other bikes, even ones with internal cable and housing routing. Between me and another technician, we went through 3 different pieces of housing before getting it right. But routing the housing through the bar is such a delicate process that you're almost guaranteed to destroy your piece of housing. A customer asked me to set his bike up moto-style, meaning I needed to route the rear brake cable to the front lever and vice versa. Thanks, Trek.Ĭable and housing routing is an absolute nightmare. And since it's a proprietary piece, I can't just dig into my spare parts drawer and put a new spacer on there. Well, one of those nubs wasn't quite in its place, and as I tightened the top cap, that little bastard broke on me. Since the spacers have small nubs on them to hold them together like puzzle pieces, they need to be perfectly aligned before the headset is preloaded. The first time my shop got one of these in, the first thing that happened was that we had to have two people holding the headset spacers together, one of whom tightened the top cap.
